How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates yarn usage with Total Yards = Project Area × Yards per sq ft × Density Multiplier. Each project type maps to a typical finished-piece surface area, and each yarn weight (0 Lace through 7 Jumbo) has an estimated yards-per-square-foot figure — thinner yarn takes more yardage to cover the same area than thicker yarn, since its stitches are smaller. Stitch density then adjusts the total up or down: denser fabric like single crochet uses more yarn, while loose or lacy fabric uses less. The result is divided by your skein's yardage (from the ball band) to estimate how many skeins to buy, plus a 10%-buffer version to cover swatching and dye-lot safety.
