Question 1

How does Minecraft convert XP points into a level?

Accepted Answer

Minecraft tracks total accumulated experience points internally, then converts that total into a level using a piecewise formula: levels 0-16 use level²+6×level, levels 16-31 use 2.5×level²-40.5×level+360, and levels 31+ use 4.5×level²-162.5×level+2220. This calculator runs both that formula and its inverse (XP → level) instantly.

Question 2

Why does each level need more XP than the last?

Accepted Answer

The XP required to go from one level to the next grows in three stages: 2×level+7 for levels 0-15, 5×level-38 for levels 16-30, and 9×level-158 for level 31 and above. That is why leveling up feels fast early on and much slower once you pass level 30.

Question 3

What is the "prior work penalty" on an anvil?

Accepted Answer

Every time an item is used in an anvil, it gets a hidden penalty that doubles: 0 uses = +0 levels, 1 use = +1, 2 uses = +3, 3 uses = +7, and so on (2^uses − 1). This penalty is added on top of the base cost of your next anvil operation for that item, which is why heavily-repaired gear gets progressively more expensive to touch again.

Question 4

Why did my anvil say "Too Expensive!"?

Accepted Answer

In Survival mode, any anvil operation that would cost 40 levels or more is blocked outright and shows "Too Expensive!" — even if you have enough levels. This is almost always caused by a high prior work penalty from repeatedly using the same item in an anvil.

Question 5

Why does a book cost less to merge than the same enchantment from a tool?

Accepted Answer

When you merge an enchantment from an enchanted book, its rarity multiplier (Common=1, Uncommon=2, Rare=4, Very Rare=8) is halved and rounded up before being multiplied by the enchantment level. Merging the same enchantment directly from another tool or armor piece uses the full multiplier, which is why "book first" is the cheaper way to stack enchantments.

Question 6

How many bookshelves do I need for level 30 enchants?

Accepted Answer

You need 15 bookshelves placed within range of the enchanting table (with a one-block gap between shelves and table) to unlock the maximum level-cost range, which guarantees the bottom slot reaches exactly level 30. Fewer bookshelves lower the guaranteed range for all three slots — use the Enchanting Table tab to see the exact min/max for any bookshelf count.

Question 7

Why is the enchanting table result a range instead of one number?

Accepted Answer

The level cost shown on each of the three enchanting table slots depends on two random rolls made by the game, so a given bookshelf count can only guarantee a minimum and maximum possible cost — not one exact value. This calculator returns that guaranteed range for each slot.
